Berries ALL Summer!
Don't like waiting for fruit trees? Don't have much space? Can't afford the whole 9 yards? Kids love munching on berries? If any or all of these apply we have the perfect intro package that still fits the Abundance bill.
-4'x20' bed, deep mulch over compost.
-3 thornless blackberry plants (early, mid, late) for 3+ months of daily berries ( can you say snack time?) Start bearing fruit second year, and within 3-5years can bear up to 30# per plant!
-20 Strawberry plants on the front edge (choice of varieties) Will start bearing the first year planted, and increase for several years after that. These can naturally spread to fill the gaps or the runners can be trimmed to keep them on the border.
Water plants only for the first few weeks after planting to get established, after that don't do anything unless it has been very dry and beneath the mulch layer is dry. Over watering just promotes weeds. If the top of the mulch stays fairly dry weed seeds will have a hard time getting established.
At the end of the season cut off all the canes that fruited to the ground, fruit will only grow on new shoots (canes). New shoots can be cut off to whatever height is convenient for your harvesters(3-5'?), mid summer, otherwise they can grow very tall (8-10')
